It's just a placeholder for now and shortly we will add functionality to this button to check if there is a newer version of the app availableĪdding Sparkle framework to Xcode project If everything goes well you should see a Star icon in your menu bar □Ĭlick on the star and it will open a pop up displaying a label "First Version"Ĭlicking on the button labeled "Check for Updates" doesn't do anything. After downloading, build and run the project. We will add and configure Sparkle to an existing macOS project. Why should we bother about Apple notarization? More on this later. Yes, Sparkle needs to be code signed as well or else your app will not be accepted for notarization. I will take you step by step on how to setup Sparkle framework in your macOS app and last but not least, configure it properly so that apple agrees to notarize it □. Adding Sparkle to an app before it's first released or in some cases like me post first release. Thus in my experience, I would strongly advise adding auto-update feature in your macOS app starting with the first release. I would have liked to push a few minor updates to get user's feedback on some new features that I am building before doing a version 2 launch. However, lacking the ability to push new version limits me in a way. Thankfully the second version of EasyFinder will bring a whole bunch of new experiences and features which warrant a hard launch instead of a soft launch. The second version of EasyFinder will be a new launch on Product Hunt, something one may not want unless it's a mega update. It doesn't have an auto-update framework and so I cannot push new versions to users and alert them. To provide peace of mind to users and of course assurance to macOS Gatekeeper ☺️ so that it let EasyFinder run, EasyFinder has been dev signed and notarized by apple. Personal plug: I released a mac menu bar app EasyFinder and hosted it outside of mac app store. One should always have an auto-update feature in their app starting with the first release, lest you will be in my shoes □. " Sparkle is an easy-to-use software update framework for macOS applications." How do you then provide new versions of your app to users seamlessly? So the only option left is hosting it outside of mac app store. Sandbox should be enabled etc., that one needs to implement in their app and which may not allow your app to work in a way that you think provide the best experience. While it's great option (no hosting fees, no monthly storage and bandwidth fees especially if your app is free and app is auto-updated with new versions) but it comes with mandatory requirements, for e.g. One way to do it is via Apple's Mac app store. In this cycle, a very critical element and the question is how to provide new versions to users? A cycle begins which starts by listening to the user's feedback, incorporating them and shipping the second version. User downloads your app and provides their feedback. You burn the midnight oil and finally come up with a build of an app, which is in a state that you are not too embarrassed to showcase to the world. You researched and found no perfect app (solution) exists that solves the problem and you decide to solve by building the perfect app. If you are familiar with the macOS app releases and why Sparkle is needed, then you can skip the next section and start here. In this tutorial, my effort will be to make it easy for someone to add and configure Sparkle. ![]() ![]() Sparkle has an excellent basic setup page but in my opinion, it is a bit too advanced and maybe a bit overwhelming to follow along. Generally, most animals don’t interfere with people if the people leave them alone. The mother alligator quickly retrieves them and takes them to the water in her mouth. Then, when the babies are about to hatch, they start making yelping or whining sounds. Unbelievably, baby alligators start whining when they’re still inside their eggs! The mother alligator covers her eggs with vegetation to keep them warm. When gators feel stressed or anxious, they may make a yelping sound. They’re relaying the message: “you’re not welcome here keep moving!” Alligators Yelp Or else! The Head SlapĪlligators are territorial creatures, and when they feel the need to mark their territories, they will lift their heads and forcefully slap them down on the water’s surface. He believes you’re way too close and wants you to go away. For example, when a gator is scared or defensive, you may hear this hissing sound. This is a warning to leave the area immediately because that is his warning sign. Many reptiles hiss and alligators are no exception. They discovered that B Flat was the key that got the gators going! Alligators Hiss While rehearsing, somebody played a note that agitated one of their resident alligators named Oscar.Īs he bellowed, the scientist immediately decided to experiment with the orchestra members playing different notes. It may sound unlikely, but alligators bellow in the key of B Flat, specifically one octave below Middle C. Some scientists at the American Museum of Natural History discovered this weird fact accidentally.ĭuring World War II, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra visited the museum. ![]() The females start the bellowing, and the males perpetuate it. Observers of these choruses have said that they “felt” the chorus more than they heard it because of the intense infrasonic bellows of the male alligators. As the alligator bellows, the infrasonic waves can cause the water above and next to him to “sprinkle.” This is commonly called the “water dance.”ĭuring the mating season, you could encounter a group of chorusing alligators. They lift their heads and arch their tails when they use this call. Infrasound or low-status sound refers to sound waves with a frequency lower than humans can hear (20 Hz). Others say it sounds like a toilet flushing! Alligators of both sexes bellow loudly when searching for a mate or staking their claim on their territory. They draw air into their lungs and blow it out in deep-toned growls.īellowing can also be alligators’ form of playing Marco Polo! He will bellow when he wants another alligator to find him. They also communicate their size to other gators by bellowing.ĭuring mating season, males bellow using infrasound. Some people think it sounds like a growl or a roar. The Sounds Alligators MakeĪlligators communicate with each other with their different sounds. The American alligator can make specific sounds that declare its territory, signal distress, warn off competitors, or announce that it’s looking for a mate. Louisiana has the biggest alligator population in the United States. So, if you’re in these areas, particularly near bodies of water, you can expect to encounter them. People would do well to remember that we must play by their rules in their territory.Īlligators are prevalent in Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. ![]() They are not tame, even if they are not our natural enemies. Wild animals can be unpredictable, although you can be sure they will always protect their territory and families. Having said that, they are not out to get you when you’re kayaking or walking on the river banks. However, they also have a habit of slinking silently through the water. Most of the time, you can hear an alligator coming. What Do Alligators Sound Like? Can You Hear Them Coming? ![]() Alligator attacks are not unheard of, but they usually happen when the animal feels threatened or when people come too close to their young. The political messages are tied around both a grimy iteration of the real America next to the hyper-fantasized perfect small-town America akin to The Stepford Wives.A post shared by Gigi Saul Guerrero she was eight years old, Guerrero was letting her imagination get the best of her inside Blockbuster when she caught a glimpse of the VHS cover of Child’s Play 2. The film comments on the struggles of crossing the border undocumented as well as the American migration system’s ability to dehumanize foreigners. Culture Shock, her feature-length directorial debut, portrays a young Mexican woman who crosses into the United States illegally while pursuing the American Dream. Partnering up with Blumhouse Productions, her two feature films, Culture Shock and Bingo Hell, give minority voices a platform to be heard. The Minority Experience in Americaīut Guerrero is still impressive when it comes to her feature-length films and most importantly she never forgets to uplift marginalized voices. Mexico Barbaro(Dia de los Muertos) and ABC’s of Death 2(M is for Matador) present this theme through female protagonists who embark on a quick journey of vengeance filled with horror and bloody practical effects. I will always be here for good-for-her films fighting against the machismo and misogynistic mentality within the Latine community. On top of that, these two shorts have a recurring theme of fighting against misogyny through a feminist revenge narrative. There are two shorts that come to mind that display Guerrero and her team’s visual style of the Grindhouse aesthetic that stemmed from Dead Crossing. ![]() Some of these have even made their way into official horror film anthologies. Dead Crossing also led to meeting the majority of the crew from Luchagore Productions.įrom there on out, Luchagore Productions has made some outstanding shorts as they perfected Guerrero’s cinematic vision. While rough at certain points it was still entertaining and commented on Mexican immigrant struggles. According to Spoon Studio’s past live event, The Bloody Films of Gigi Saul Guerrero, this was Guerrero’s first attempt at using blood. The film is about three Mexicans at the border running from Americans who are hellbent for blood. This was Guerrero dipping her toes into what eventually evolved into her signature style. The short encapsulates Guerrero’s trademarks of using Mexican culture within her narratives, the use of practical effects, and her Grindhouse aesthetic that she continuously captures.īut she wouldn’t be at this level of expertise if it wasn’t for one of her early shorts, Dead Crossing. His escape is only granted if he fights a powerful luchador. El Gigantefollows a man in search of his missing daughter who gets captured by a deranged family. My introduction to Luchagore Productions and Guerrero’s filmmaking was through El Gigante, courtesy of Shudder at the time. ![]() Even if it’s a two-minute video about Guerrero using a cheap face mask that rips off her face, rest assured that Guerrero will bring her A game. ![]() No matter how big or small the project is, Guerrero brings the same effort and expertise behind and in front of the camera. Through the help of her company, Luchagore Production, a name I love dearly, Guerrero is able to accomplish impressive and believable practical effects and stories. It’s her love for the gooey practical effects. Her multiple short films range in diverse storytelling but there’s one factor that keeps these narratives connected. Guerrero’s passion for filmmaking is clear and abundant. This Mexican Canadian director has made a name for herself within the horror community with her two feature-length films and copious amounts of short films. Within this list of already great directors, Gigi Saul Guerrero stood out to me the most. The Latine community got a huge win this year with the announcement of the new list of directors for V/H/S/85. Luchagore’s Passion for Short Films and Practical Effects ![]() I’m not a big rock or metal music guy, but the music fits the action well, and firing an auto-shotty off to chunky guitar riffs just works on an original DOOM-cover art level. Enemies blast apart and flail wildly before their bodies are lost beneath a sea of incoming foes. They’re well designed, loud, and their bullets have a huge impact on whatever they hit. This is crucial because most classes start with tiny guns and spend their Dosh every round for bigger toys, like a grenade launcher or a microwave gun. Thanks to Killing Floor’s over-the-top sound and graphics, weapons are satisfying to use-and not just the big ones. So fun that, if you’re not bothered by a lack of variety (think MOBAS, which are often played in one mode), there’s enough here to keep you entertained for a long time. Everything is frantic and on fire, and pulling through with your class abilities, limited weapons and ammo, and some good old-fashioned teamwork (and yelling) is incredibly fun. The heavy-duty commando is holding his own for now, but his ammo’s low and he’s about to be vomited on by a huge, bloated monster. ![]() The sharpshooter up on the ledge doesn’t see the cloaked enemies sneaking up behind her. You might look around and see that, over by the bus, a zombie is gnawing on the medic’s leg while others close in for a bite. Killing Floor is great at replicating those moments in movies where everything is going very wrong for our heroes. Gearing up, putting together a balanced team, and seeing how well you do remains fun time after time. Once you do find a few classes you like, you can really dive into what Killing Floor is all about: killing stuff with your friends, earning money (or “Dosh”), buying better guns and armor between rounds, and doing it all over again. If you’re into Killing Floor for the long haul, it might matter, but the bonuses I saw from this throughout 15 hours of play were negligible. You can level up classes you aren’t even playing, which is a good touch, but that progress is very slow and it forces you to buy odd weapons or play in ways that don’t line up with your equipped class. So, if you’re interested in a class but you’re not sure if it fits your style, you can easily put in the time of a short-ish shooter campaign only to learn that you don’t care much for it. Putting together a balanced team, and seeing how well you do remains fun time after time. Combined with the fact that any class can wield another class’ weapon, it’s going to be a while before your role feels powerful and solidified - I’d say around level 10, when you unlock your second skill, which will likely take around six hours. Until that point, you’re really only working with your passive bonuses which haven’t yet scaled well because of your low level. They all become fun and useful eventually, but the biggest problem is that they don’t begin to feel distinct until level five when you unlock your first special perk, which can easily take two to three hours of play. One class is a demolitions expert, with access to explosive pistols and C4 another spews fire on everyone and everything, making for a great crowd controller. I felt incredibly strong and useful, as I did with each class given enough time to unlock their abilities. The first class to hook me was the Field Medic, which passively gains armor and movement speed, wields weapons with secondary-fire healing darts, and gains the ability to self heal while healing others. Killing Floor’s 10 classes, awkwardly referred to in-game as “perks,” are distinct and fun to play, and putting together a good team has a huge impact on whether you’ll succeed. ![]() With that mindset clearly front and center for developer Tripwire, Killing Floor 2 delights on the back of its great gameplay. It’s not a buffet though it’s comfort food, meant to be eaten again and again and again. However, zoom out from the gorefest a bit and you’ll see Killing Floor 2 is also an online shooter with only two modes, two boss battles, and some unnecessary time sinks. It’s a fast, fun co-op shooter with cool classes, satisfying guns, and aggressive, grotesque enemies, all doused in fitting heavy metal music. The few things it does, it does boldly and unabashedly well. Killing Floor 2 wears its heart on its sleeve-a bold move considering there’s no ace stuffed up there. ![]() When she got to the elevator, Charles was on it, having also realized about the garbage bag. Later that night, Mabel realized that it was strange for Tim to take a bag of garbage onto the elevator when there are garbage chutes on every floor. Annoyed, she sent them away, telling them it was a textbook suicide. They started asking questions, making Williams realize they had been listening to a true crime podcast. The three are caught by Donna Williams, who told them it was a suicide. The three got to the crime scene and discovered that the victim was Tim Kono, whom they rode the elevator with earlier that day. She went to see Tim, telling him Oscar was about to be released from prison, and telling him he could still go make things right and tell what he'd seen. Ten years after Zoe's death, Mabel returned to the Arconia to remodel her aunt's apartment. Zoe's death and Oscar's arrest deeply affected Mabel and made her mother very concerned about Mabel. Oscar, whose dad is the Arconia's superintendent, copied his dad's key so the Hardy Boys could break into any apartment while the owners were out of town. At some point, Mabel and Tim met Oscar Torres and Zoe Cassidy. The two eventually became good friends, and would reunite every school break when Mabel visited the Arconia to read The Hardy Boys book series and pretend they were the Hardy Boys, solving mysteries they would make up around Tim's apartment for years. ![]() Tim became interested in a book Mabel was reading, The Missing Chums from The Hardy Boys series. She would spent every school break at the Arconia with her wealthy aunt Salma Ramirez, who lived in apartment 12E. Mabel grew up in Bayport, Long Island, where she lived with her mother Silvia Mora, who was a single mother after the death of Mabel's father.
